How much CO2 is emitted per minute for a medium size car (in the U.S.) while idling in a traffic jam?
I am a student high school and every day there is a big traffic jam around my school during the start and end of the school. I want to quantify the effect of emissions of all cars and invesitage the impact it has on those who walk / bike to school with these circumstances.
I'm not sure where you are, but if there environmental companies in your area, ask for your help. Monitoring CO2 levels when there are cars around to establish a baseline. After the monitor during rush hour the choice of the locations where children may be exposed, and right at the point of abandonment, the points of congregation, school entrances. You probably want do so for several days to account for wind conditions and variability. Use the accumulated data for comparison with published results on long-term CO2 exposure data. Note that exposure times are very short in duration, however. You're getting a relativley few minutes of exposure. Operators toll have constant exposure over years and I know there are studies on its health consequences.
