Independent Professional Baseball Players: Why play for little money Tales
If you have attended an independent professional baseball game then you know that the level of the game is equivalent to different levels of the regular "affiliated" minor leagues. What is not known to many fans, however, is how little money that many of the independent baseball players do.
Unlike many jobs in North America, independent baseball players not have a union or the company as the Human Resources department. They can be released almost at any time, for almost any reason, and usually there is nothing in their contracts to guarantee any payment after players retire. When told all about this, many fans say: "Why do these guys do that?!?"
These are a few reasons:
A true love of the game: Many players in independent baseball believe they have been overlooked by teams Major League Baseball exploration departments. They genuinely believe they deserve a chance to be in a "farm team affiliated" with a major League organizations, and they really love to play baseball. Many fans whom have attended baseball games independent comment on the rush and passion of players. A player who is believed to have been overlooked can play with a chip on his shoulder "to show that belongs to a farm team of Major League affiliates.
The need to be closer to home: Often, there are a few guys in every independent league that really belong to a higher level of baseball. For some reason, however, need to be closer to home with a less strenuous travel schedule. Sometimes players just starting a family, others have to help a sick member family, and others need the support of friends and family to feel comfortable with playing at the professional level.
The desire to continue his baseball career: Many players play in an independent baseball league, in order to gain credibility for his career after playing. Some players want to manage or coach in professional baseball, others want to coach at the college level, and others want to make the transition to the main office of a professional sports team after his retirement.
The need for companionship: If you've ever seen a documentary about life in the minors, then you know that the players love to play baseball, enjoy their follies with his teammates, playing cards in the clubhouse, and the opportunity to develop lifelong friends especially in the long bus rides! If a player is good enough to be considered professional time, many will have the opportunity to play in independent leagues, because he knows how competitive the demand. Other players from around the continent are more than willing to take his place, so he knows that part of an elite level of baseball even though it is considered independent member organizations.
A chance to rebuild his career: Sometimes an extremely talented player ends up in an independent league due to a injury, the salary cap move, or simply due to "politics" in organized baseball. This player will play in an independent baseball team, to show the scouts that he is healthy, ready to return to a cheaper price or simply that the other team that released him made a mistake. In any given year, dozens of baseball players to sign separate contracts with minor league teams affiliates and each year a few can play in the Major Leagues.
The next time you see an independent baseball game, or meet some baseball players independently by the city, you now have a better understanding of why they do what they do, regardless of the price at which they play. If you ever have said that you think professional athletes who play with more passion and are in excess, then be sure to attend an independent professional baseball game. You will be pleasantly surprised!
