Maple Bats …. Passing the test of time and still going strong.
It was about almost 9 years since Barry Bonds broke the record for a single season home run while using a baseball bat during the season maple. That magical season in baseball showcase was the year of Maple Bats. Although players like Joe Carter used maple even as far away as the 1980s, Maple never take off until the 2001 season when Bonds smashed 73 homers to break the record for home runs in one baseball season. Since then, Maple rose into the hands more and more in baseball … maple and has not looked back since.
A lot of things in our society, turn out to be fads, and not surviving hard times. Maple baseball bats are beginning to silence critics who have been against strong defenders of maple. There have been several instances where Maple has been guilty of serious injuries in baseball. A prime example was during the 2008 season when the Pittsburgh Pirates hitting coach Don Long was beaten about the face just below the eyes by a large number of bats maple Nate McLouth in the eighth inning of a game at Dodger Stadium. Witnesses say the block appeared to be about half of the bats. Just ten days later, another piece of maple bat flew from the hands of the Colorado Rockies' Todd Helton and flew into the stands and broke the jaw of a Dodgers fan.
A lot of players concerned about the safety of his teammates, coaches and fans have also switched to Ash Maple or birch. Includes a few seasons ago, when Frank Thomas and Eric Chavez changed to Maple Birch, Jason Bay and switched back to Ash Birch.
A 2005 study commissioned by MLB found no difference in how fast the ball leaves the bat of maple or ash. But even maple seems to give hitters in the confidence that the ash does not. Although the exact number of players swing maple MLB is unknown, the fact is that is a majority, with some reports estimating the number of 60 to 70 percent.
It is also undoubtedly a longer life with Maple. Several studies have found that the average life of a maple bat in the MLB is about a month, compared to about a week long life of Ash. So while there is concern among MLB officials on security risks associated with Maple baseball bats, Bat Manufactures are working hard with MLB officials to create a solution to security risks, apart from the banning of maple bats in baseball.
Over all questions and controversies and concerns surrounding Maple baseball bats demand is still there and the popularity continues to grow. Maple bats can see some tough times but it seems the new king of the wood bat is here to stay.
